I picked this little thing up at Wal-mart earlier today, saw it in a clearance bin. In the past I have heard many references to this movie but never actually saw it myself, it’s pretty much the film version of every nerdy teenagers dream in the 80s. Back in those days, consoles did not exist and arcades ruled the land. In this movie Alex Rogan is some average kid who instead of going out with his girlfriend and hanging out with other kids, he plays this arcade game. He breaks the all-time record and is recruited to join the real Starfighter alliance. Hell I would love to be Snake if I was the best at MGS4 or go on treasure hunts for being so good at Uncharted. I think after watching Tron Legacy last week, I was hit with a sudden urge to watch old sci-fi movies again. The CGI in this movie was amazing for its time, just two years after the original Tron (1982) the CGI had drastically improved. Keep in mind this was before PCs existed so rending graphics like these must’ve been impossible. Anyways the movie was pretty good, but like most old school sci-fi movies it was pretty anti-climatic, I think I just never want movies to end since they always seem to end too soon for me, I’m rarely ever satisfied with when the movie ends because it seems abrupt to me and I always think of all the extra stuff they could’ve added. Overall it was a pretty fun film but I don’t think it’s something that everyone would enjoy, feels like you gotta be pretty nerdy to enjoy this haha. I think old sci-fi movies are amazing, even though their technology was nowhere near our’s is today, they still do great jobs with what they had at hand. Looking back and thinking about how they must’ve made this movie just creates a sense of nostalgia for me even though its my first time watching it years after its initial release. They just capture a child-like charm that I love in movies that I can’t really find in sci-fi movies today. Anyways I’m currently torrenting BladeRunner and Soylent Green, found a list of great old sci-fi so I guess I know what I’ll be doing with my break!
